Upside Down Text Generator
This upside down text generator swaps each letter, digit and punctuation mark for a Unicode character that looks turned 180°, then reverses the order, so the line reads correctly when the screen is turned over. Copy a style and paste it anywhere; paste flipped text back in to read it normally.

Variations
Upside-down text is not a picture or a font. Unicode already has characters that look like turned letters, such as ɐ, which Unicode names LATIN SMALL LETTER TURNED A, and ɥ, the turned h. Where it has none, the generator borrows a lookalike from another script: a Canadian syllabic for B, a Korean letter for 2, Bopomofo letters for 4 and 7.
Why use our upside down text generator?
Turned and reversed
It reads right when the phone is rotated.
Letters, digits, marks
a to z, A to Z, 0 to 9 and 17 punctuation marks.
It flips back too
Paste flipped text in to read it normally.
No boxes in our tests
Every output character drew in three browser engines on a Mac.
How to use it
- Enter a word or a whole line in the box at the top.
- Read the Upside Down style first; all 12 styles update as you type.
- Press Copy on the one you want.
- Paste it anywhere. To undo it, paste the flipped text back into the box.
What we tested on 23 October 2026
We typed a pangram, a sentence that uses every letter, into this page in a real browser. Every letter came out turned, the comma and exclamation mark turned with it, and the line ran backwards.
The generator on this page, captured 23 October 2026 with a pangram typed in. The first style turns every letter and reverses the order; the others are the variations described below.
Then we checked every output character against Unicode's character database and in three browser engines. That testing is why capital Q now turns into Ό and why the semicolon carries a hidden mark; both are explained below.
Upside-down letters and numbers
Here is the whole map, in typing order. On the page the order is also reversed.
| You type | Upside down |
|---|---|
| a to z | ɐ q ɔ p ǝ ɟ ƃ ɥ ᴉ ɾ ʞ l ɯ u o d b ɹ s ʇ n ʌ ʍ x ʎ z |
| A to Z | ∀ ᙠ Ɔ ᗡ Ǝ Ⅎ ⅁ H I ſ ʞ ˥ W N O Ԁ Ό ᴚ S ⊥ ∩ Λ M X ⅄ Z |
| 0 to 9 | 0 Ɩ ᄅ Ɛ ㄣ ϛ 9 ㄥ 8 6 |
| . , ? ! ' " ( ) [ ] { } < > & _ ; | ˙ ' ¿ ¡ , „ ) ( ] [ } { > < ⅋ ‾ ؛ |
Fourteen characters look the same after a half turn and stay as typed: l, o, s, x, z, the capitals H, I, N, O, S, X, Z, and 0 and 8. Pairs such as b and q, n and u, M and W, or 6 and 9 swap. Accented letters, @, ^ and ` pass through unchanged, and emoji stay in one piece.
Which characters have no true upside-down form?
Most of them. Only 16 of the characters this generator outputs have TURNED in their Unicode names, most of them from the IPA Extensions block: ɐ ǝ ɥ ᴉ ʞ ɯ ɹ ʇ ʌ ʍ ʎ, plus Ⅎ ⅁ ⅄ ᴚ and ⅋. The rest are borrowed shapes. For five characters Unicode does have a proper turned form, but none of our test browsers could draw it.
| Character | What Unicode has | What the generator uses | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Q | No turned Q | Ό, Greek omicron with tonos | The accent sits where the tail would |
| K and T | U+A7B0 and U+A7B1, CAPITAL TURNED K and T | ʞ and ⊥ | Drew as boxes |
| 2 and 3 | U+218A and U+218B, TURNED DIGIT TWO and THREE | ᄅ and Ɛ | Drew as boxes |
| ; | U+2E35, TURNED SEMICOLON | ؛ (Arabic) plus a left-to-right mark | Drew as a box |
| B D J P 1 4 5 7 | No turned forms | ᙠ ᗡ ſ Ԁ Ɩ ㄣ ϛ ㄥ | Closest shapes that drew |
| @ ^ ` é ñ | No turned forms | Left as typed | Nothing to swap in |
Our test page in Chromium 151 on macOS 26.6, 23 October 2026: the 78 characters the generator outputs, then the five true turned forms it avoids, drawn as empty boxes.
| Engine (macOS 26.6) | Version | The 78 output characters | The 5 true turned forms |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chromium | 151.0.7922.34 | All drawn | Empty boxes |
| WebKit (Safari's engine) | 26.5 | All drawn | Empty boxes |
| Firefox | 153.0 | All drawn | Code-point boxes |
We checked each character alone and in running text. We did not test Windows, Android or iPhone, which carry other fonts. On the Mac, ᄅ came from a Korean font and ㄣ and ㄥ from a Chinese one, which is why 2, 4 and 7 look wider. The guide to why fancy text shows as boxes explains the mechanism.
For text direction the Arabic semicolon counts as an Arabic letter, so under rule W2 of Unicode's bidirectional algorithm a digit after it becomes an Arabic number and is drawn on its other side. Flip “Meet me at 8; bring snacks” and the 8 jumps ahead of the semicolon; a left-to-right mark stops it.
Our reorder test in Chromium 151, 23 October 2026, with the semicolon in red and the 8 in blue. Line A is the old output, line B the new one. WebKit 26.5 and Firefox 153 drew the same swap.
Upside down vs mirrored vs backwards text
Upside down is a half turn: letters turned, order reversed. Mirrored is a reflection: letters flipped left to right, order reversed. Backwards only reverses the order.
| Style on this page | What changes | Hello world becomes |
|---|---|---|
| Upside Down | Letters turned, order reversed | plɹoʍ ollǝH |
| Flipped Letters, Left to Right | Letters turned, order kept | Hǝllo ʍoɹlp |
| Mirrored | Letters mirrored, order reversed | blɿow ollɘH |
| Backwards | Order reversed only | dlrow olleH |
The Overline style becomes an underline once the screen is rotated. For corrupted zalgo text, use the glitch text generator.
How do you flip upside-down text back?
Paste it into the box and read the Upside Down style. Each stand-in maps back to its letter, and reversing again restores the order. A capital K returns as a small k, because both share ʞ.
Flipping back, captured 23 October 2026: the upside-down pangram pasted into the box, and the Upside Down style reading it normally again.
Where can you use upside-down text?
Anywhere that takes typed text: messages, comments, bios and documents. The reader needs no special font. A search for the word will not find it, because ʇxǝʇ and text are different characters, and long passages are tiring, so keep it to a joke or a name. For upright styles, try small caps, bubble text or every generator.
Frequently asked questions
Is upside down text a font?
No. It is ordinary Unicode characters that look like turned letters, so it keeps its look wherever you paste it.
Why do some flipped letters look a bit off?
Only some letters have true turned forms. The rest are lookalikes from other scripts and fonts, so size and weight vary.
Do upside-down letters show as boxes on some phones?
They can, if a device lacks the font. On a Mac none of these characters did in Chromium, WebKit or Firefox; we did not test phones.
Can I turn upside-down text back to normal?
Yes. Paste it into the box and read the Upside Down style. A capital K comes back lowercase.
Is this upside down text generator free?
Yes, with no account or limit. Text is converted in your browser, not sent to a server.
