How Zalgo Text Works
Unicode combining marks are characters with no width of their own; they render attached to the preceding character. Stack twenty of them onto one letter and the marks pile up above and below, overflowing into the lines around it. Nothing is broken - it is exactly what the specification says should happen.
Cursed Text Copy and Paste
Glitch text copies like any other text, but it is far longer than it looks. A ten-character word at heavy intensity can exceed three hundred characters, which matters anywhere there is a character limit or a database field to fit into.
Glitch Text for Usernames
Many platforms strip or reject combining marks precisely because they overflow their layout. Light intensity passes filters more often than heavy. Where glitch is blocked entirely, the upside-down and mirrored styles give a distorted look using ordinary characters.
Upside Down and Mirrored Text
Both are built from real Unicode characters that happen to look like flipped letters - no combining marks involved. Upside-down text also reverses character order so it reads correctly when the screen is turned around. Because these are ordinary characters, they survive filters that reject zalgo.
